On Monday, officials from Huntsville and Colorado Springs gathered to discuss the future of Space Command, as part of a three-day discovery trip. Over 90 participants from Colorado Springs, including the Mayor, business leaders, and county commissioners, engaged in discussions about the relocation of Space Command headquarters to Huntsville.
Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, participated as a keynote speaker, addressing the ongoing transition and partnership opportunities between the two cities. Currently, about 150 of the headquarters’ 1,800 personnel are based at Redstone Arsenal, with expectations for that figure to rise to 200 by the year’s end. By 2028, half of the staff is anticipated to be in Huntsville.
The agenda included discussions about the Golden Dome program, aimed at enhancing defense against advanced aerial threats. Both cities play pivotal roles in national space and missile defense, with numerous aerospace companies operating in both locations. The visit aims to foster collaborative efforts as Space Command moves forward with its transition to Huntsville, which is expected to be completed in the early 2030s.
