Energy Department provides $4.2 billion for nuclear enhancements in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The Energy Department recently announced a conditional loan package of up to $4.2 billion for Vistra Corp., aimed at upgrading nuclear power plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. This funding will enhance three of Vistra’s reactors, increasing their electricity generation capacity by around 433 megawatts, enough to power about 3 million homes.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright defended the loan as a necessary measure to provide more reliable and affordable energy. This move is part of the Energy Department’s broader strategy to support nuclear energy and follows a series of government-backed loans under the Office of Energy Dominance Financing.

As energy costs rise, interest in nuclear energy is growing, with 45 states taking steps to support nuclear generation through various legislative actions. Despite government assistance, there’s a significant role for private investment in this sector, with rising capital spending and increased funding for startups focused on nuclear technology.

While the Trump administration seeks to promote nuclear energy through subsidies and easing regulations, critics argue that government intervention might prioritize certain projects over others, rather than allowing the market to determine which plants need upgrades.
