Boston business owners in the downtown area call for increased police visibility following survey indicating safety concerns.

Downtown Boston residents and business owners are expressing concerns over increasing crime perceptions and are requesting a stronger police presence. A survey by the Downtown Boston Neighborhood Alliance revealed that 56% of respondents feel less safe than earlier this year, a significant rise from last October’s 35%. Notably, 90% identified public safety as an urgent issue, with drugs and violence being primary concerns.

While some, including business owner Babak Bina, advocate for increased police visibility to deter crime and improve perception, Michael Nichols of the Downtown Boston Alliance suggests that the perception of crime is worse than reality, emphasizing that most incidents involve known individuals rather than random acts.

Despite reassurances, recent violent incidents, including shootings and assaults, have fueled anxiety. In response, 45% of survey participants called for a more visible police presence. The Downtown Boston Neighborhood Alliance is collaborating with officials to address these concerns and implement effective safety measures ahead of the holiday season.
