US Observes Potential Plague Case in Russia Amid Rising Demands for Travel Limits

U.S. Monitoring Suspected Pneumonic Plague Case in Russia

The U.S. is keeping a close watch on reports of a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia following the death of a 28-year-old lab worker in Irkutsk. A State Department spokesperson stated that they are collaborating with the CDC and other agencies to monitor the situation.

While the Russian authorities have been urged to share timely and accurate information, it has been noted that pneumonic plague is treatable with antibiotics, particularly if caught early.

U.S. lawmakers have expressed concerns, especially considering Russia’s historical allegations of biological weapons development. Representative Don Bacon linked the current situation to Russian disinformation regarding U.S.-supported labs in Ukraine, criticizing such narratives while emphasizing the need to investigate Russia’s own biological programs.

Former Representative Adam Kinzinger called for a complete ban on flights to and from Russia in light of the developments.

Incident Details

The case involves Darya Shipilova, a laboratory technician who reportedly suffered a serious illness after accidentally breaking a test tube containing plague bacteria on September 25, subsequently dying on October 2. While Russian health officials diagnosed her with “pneumonia of unknown etiology,” they have not confirmed any accidents occurred at the institute.

In response to the situation, approximately 200 individuals who may have had contact with Shipilova are under medical observation, and local hospitals have implemented restrictions.

Understanding Pneumonic Plague

Pneumonic plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, affects the lungs and can spread through respiratory droplets. The disease can escalate rapidly but is treatable with prompt antibiotic intervention. While monitoring continues, there is currently no confirmed evidence of a broader outbreak in the region.
