Heavy, stationary downpours across Catalonia have led to significant operational challenges at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), causing widespread flight delays and cancellations impacting air travel across Europe.

With rain totals exceeding 3.5 inches per hour over the weekend, Barcelona’s air traffic control had to limit hourly runway capacity for safety reasons. This has resulted in a severe backlog of aircraft and crew, persisting into Monday morning.

As reported by FlightAware, Barcelona International (BCN) is currently at the top of global departure delay charts, with 122 delayed flights—about 22% of operations—and 16 cancellations as of Monday morning. British Airways and Vueling Airlines are particularly affected, with 38 and 26 cancellations, respectively. Other major European carriers, including easyJet and KLM, are experiencing significant disruptions, with easyJet reporting 512 delays across its network.

Localized flooding has also impacted regional Rodalies rail lines and access roads to BCN, making ground transfers unpredictable for both staff and travelers.

Rebooking Information:

Several airlines have implemented flexible rebooking policies for affected travelers:

  • Iberia: Travel waivers are available for tickets issued on or before September 30, allowing travelers to rebook for travel through October 5 without penalty for alternative dates until October 10 or 15, subject to fare availability.

  • Vueling: The home-hub carrier is offering fee-free flight changes to upcoming alternate dates or full refunds as flight credit.

  • British Airways & European Carriers: Passengers affected by flow-management holds entering Spanish airspace can rebook onto alternative flights or claim full refunds.

Advisors are advised to verify flight status directly through GDS portals before clients head to the airport and to allow ample buffer time for any scheduled airport pickups or cruise transfers today.
