Capcom recently announced plans to integrate AI into their game engine, the RE Engine, during a technology conference. With a successful track record of 30 games since 2017, including critically acclaimed titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the company believes AI could enhance development efficiency, particularly in playtesting and debugging.
Programmer Satoshi Ishida mentioned that the initiative, known as REX, aims to evolve the engine into an “AI game engine” that will support simple programming languages for easier AI integration. The vision includes not just optimization but also collaborative game development with AI.
Despite this shift, Capcom emphasizes that AI will not replace human artistry but will serve as a tool to facilitate processes, supporting the creative aspects of game development. VP of Game Development Shinichi Inoue highlighted the importance of human collaboration and context in maximizing productivity, while Technical Director Kazuki Abe pointed out that AI should help streamline routine tasks, ensuring that humans maintain control over quality.
The future role of AI in Capcom games remains to be seen, but the company is taking a collaborative approach to harnessing AI’s potential in the gaming space.
