Science Education Highlights the Fairgrounds Event

The October 10th Celebrate Science event promises an engaging experience with hands-on STEM activities and exhibits. Rick Crosslin, a seasoned STEM educator and scientist in residence for the Wayne Township School System, highlights the heightened interest in science education in central Indiana among both students and teachers. The event, organized by Celebrate Science Indiana, aims to bring science beyond the classroom, featuring around 50 to 60 exhibitors in various scientific fields. Admission is free, apart from parking, making it accessible for children, families, educators, and anyone intrigued by science.

Crosslin emphasizes that effective science education requires hands-on experiences rather than passive learning through reading or watching. He conducts demonstrations, such as static electricity experiments, to show how everyday phenomena can inspire curiosity. He encourages a questioning mindset about the world to enrich life.

Additionally, Crosslin links science education to Indiana’s economy, noting the support from companies like Lilly and Corteva. He believes students must grasp the connection between scientific advancements and industry, stressing that “science helps humanity.” Celebrate Science offers businesses a platform to showcase how innovation and science contribute to products and ideas in the marketplace.
