Kingdom Come: Deliverance Co-Founder Critiques Many RPGs as ‘Teenage Games’ and Expresses Fatigue with ‘Chosen One’ Themes

In a recent interview, Martin Klima, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, shared his thoughts on RPGs and their repetitive formulas. He expressed his boredom with traditional tropes, like the ‘chosen one’ saving the universe, finding them too straightforward and similar. Klima likened many RPGs to “Progress Quest,” highlighting a desire for innovation in gaming narratives.

He noted that current games often cater to a younger demographic, despite the aging player base. Klima attributed the persistence of clichéd storylines to publishers’ reluctance to take risks, focusing instead on proven formulas. He mentioned his appreciation for the craftsmanship in games from companies like Ubisoft but urged for more innovation. Despite recognizing the financial pressures these companies face, Klima believes that gaming could benefit from fresh storytelling approaches.
