Opened in 1959, this 29-kilometer route, named one of Japan’s 100 Best Roads, connects Takayu Onsen and Tsuchiyu Onsen. At its peak of 1,622 meters, the scenery transforms dramatically with mountain peaks, valleys, and colorful autumn foliage.

One scenic stop is the Fudosawa Bridge, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over the Fukushima Basin. The contrast of the autumn trees with Mount Azuma-Kofuji creates a stunning landscape.

At Jododaira, the heart of the Skyline, you’ll experience volcanic landscapes and scenic trails within the Bandai-Asahi National Park. A short walk leads to the crater rim of Mount Azuma-Kofuji, while more adventurous hikers can explore Mount Issaikyo and Goshikinuma, known as the Witch’s Eye. Autumn transforms these mountains into a canvas of vibrant reds and yellows.

For those without a car, 2026 brings the Jododaira Sky Access bus service, connecting Fukushima Station with Jododaira, providing sightseeing stops and hiking options. Just 90 minutes from Tokyo via the Tohoku Shinkansen, this area makes for an excellent addition to your autumn itinerary beyond the usual Tokyo and Kyoto routes.

The 2026 autumn service will operate from October 1 to November 3, coinciding with the Skyline’s remarkable foliage season.
