Alpaca Cafe in Northern Serbia
A unique cafe in northern Serbia is now home to six friendly alpacas, creating a charming atmosphere for guests at the Tiganjica Ethno-Village resort, located near Stajicevo, north of Belgrade. The café, which recently opened, allows visitors to interact with the alpacas as they enjoy their drinks.
Background
Inspired by a visit to an alpaca cafe in Slovakia, resort owner Zoran Ostojin wanted to introduce these gentle creatures to people in Serbia. He was captivated by their energy and seeks to share that experience with others.
The Alpacas
Known for their calm and friendly nature, alpacas are smaller relatives of llamas and camels. They are cherished for their soft fleece and distinctive humming sounds. At Tiganjica, guests can observe and spend time with the alpacas, which often participate in organized tours. Visitors must schedule their visits in advance, which costs around $11.35, covering a drink and alpaca food (carrots, lettuce, and apples).
House rules are in place to ensure proper interactions. Visitors are advised against approaching alpacas from behind or feeding them outside of the provided food options.
Unique Personalities
According to Simona Frangi, the alpacas’ caretaker, each animal has its own personality. For example, Ljubica, a black alpaca, is known to be grumpy, while Snezana, the smallest, has taken on the role of the herd leader. Frangi notes that alpacas are sensitive to people’s intentions; they tend to move away from those who may pose a threat but approach those offering kindness.
The Owner’s Journey
Ostojin began his journey caring for injured animals alongside his brother as a child. The first alpaca came to him as a gift from the Belgrade Zoo eight years ago, and he was immediately struck by the animal’s calming presence, describing it as having a healing ability.
The Tiganjica Ethno-Village café not only offers a unique dining experience but also fosters a special connection between guests and these gentle animals, highlighting the joys of coexistence with nature.
