Justin Casse: Developing an International Horse Racing Enterprise

Justin Casse: A Journey from Trainer to Bloodstock Agent

Justin Casse initially aimed to follow in his older brother Mark’s footsteps as a horse trainer. However, the early morning routines of the job weren’t appealing. After graduating from Florida State University, Justin worked with Mark, caring for racehorses requiring attention around the clock.

As time passed, Justin became captivated by the buying and selling of horses, eventually transitioning to a bloodstock agent role. At 46, he advises clients on thoroughbred investments and owns stakes in around 100 horses worldwide. His family background provided him entry into the industry, but he carved his own path by building networks and learning through personal investments.

Growing Up in the Casse Family

Raised in Ocala, Florida, Justin was steeped in the racing culture from a young age. Despite the family’s history in the industry, he initially pursued interests in music and sports. A pivotal moment occurred when he witnessed his brother’s success at the Met Mile, igniting his own ambition.

Once Justin completed his education, he joined Mark in the family business but was drawn to the sales aspect. In 2004, he took the leap of faith to work for a horse sales company in Kentucky, much to his family’s chagrin. This decision proved invaluable, allowing him to create his own clientele, including high-profile names like the Steinbrenner family.

Throughout his journey, Justin honed his skills in evaluating horses, encouraged by Mark to consider both strengths and weaknesses during assessments. This hands-on experience guided his judgment in the field.

An Eye for Talent

Justin’s knack for spotting horse talent became evident early on when he purchased a horse for $20,000 and later sold it for $80,000, instilling a sense of confidence that would soon be tempered by reality. His investments taught him the importance of cautious judgment, especially once his own finances were involved.

Regular trips to Europe enriched his understanding of international horse breeding and training practices. Exposure to various training methods, like those more flexible in Europe compared to the fixed schedules in the U.S., deepened his insights into potential horse development.

One notable success was purchasing War of Will for €250,000 in 2018. This horse, trained by Mark, won the Preakness Stakes, showcasing Justin’s ability to trust his judgment despite skepticism from others.

Navigating Challenges

The world of horse racing also comes with significant unpredictability. Casse recounted moments where horses sustained injuries or failed to meet expectations, demonstrating the business’s volatile nature. Each investment is akin to venture capital, where a few successful horses must offset the losses of others.

His responsibilities extend beyond the purchase; they encompass finding care, choosing trainers, and managing owner expectations. Even when away, Casse stays emotionally invested in his horses, feeling deeply for both his clients and their animals. This level of emotional involvement often requires him to navigate mental health challenges, a topic he openly addresses in the industry.

Casse remains committed to ensuring a proper life for every horse, even after their racing careers end, supporting initiatives for their care post-retirement.

In conclusion, Justin Casse’s journey in the thoroughbred industry illustrates a blend of passion, resilience, and a keen understanding of both the emotional and financial dimensions of horse racing. He embraces the unpredictable nature of the business, accepting that while it may not always be boring, it offers constant learning and growth.
