At the world premiere of his film Behemoth!, director Tony Gilroy expressed strong concerns about the recent merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. He described the situation as “tragic,” emphasizing that the merger threatens to dismantle the mid-budget, adult-oriented films that have traditionally sustained Hollywood. With a budget of $36 million, Behemoth! represents the kind of filmmaking that has helped many creators, including Gilroy himself, succeed in the industry.
He argued that while many claim the movie business is in trouble, there’s a robust conversation among audiences about films and shows, indicating a solid foundation for the industry—a foundation he fears could be jeopardized by the merger aimed at maximizing profit through venture capital.
During the premiere at the New York Film Festival, where Behemoth! was featured as a centerpiece film, Gilroy praised the festival’s lineup and expressed gratitude to those involved in creating and supporting his film, despite its challenges in gaining approval and distribution. Producer Sanne Wohlenberg echoed Gilroy’s sentiments, noting the turbulence in Hollywood and the limitations that filmmakers may face moving forward. Despite these challenges, Wohlenberg maintained a hopeful outlook for the future of cinema.
