Scott Bessent likens AI CEOs advocating for regulation to Hannibal Lecter.

Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, recently expressed his views on tech leaders advocating for regulations on AI during his appearance on “The Axios Show.” He likened these CEOs to Hannibal Lecter, suggesting that their alarmist calls for government intervention without offering solutions are not examples of true leadership.

Bessent urged AI companies to slow down their own development of technology voluntarily, rather than seeking regulatory measures from Washington, in line with the White House’s stance on a recent organized slowdown in AI advancements prompted by safety concerns. He acknowledged that companies like OpenAI have already taken steps to pause certain developments after internal safety assessments.

Others in the AI community, including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, have been vocal about the need for government regulations, citing an escalating race for dominance that poses safety risks. Recent events, such as the resignation of OpenAI’s safety leader David Robinson, underscore significant concerns regarding the rapid pace of AI advancements and their potential implications for society.
