Magic: The Gathering (MTG) has ventured into science fiction territory recently, especially with its upcoming Star Trek crossover set, marking the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Principal designer Gavin Verhey shared insights into this bold new set, revealing that discussions began around 2021 with full design work kicking off in 2022.
This expansive set will feature concepts and characters spanning all 60 years of Star Trek history, incorporating elements from the original series to the latest productions like Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks. The design team emphasized creating gameplay mechanics that reflect the show’s themes, focusing on exploration and moral dilemmas rather than pure combat.
The set will include four “ready-to-play” Commander decks representing iconic characters and factions, such as the Klingons and the Borg. It will also introduce new mechanics like “Strange New Worlds” and “Face a Dilemma”, aiming to foster deeper engagement and role-playing elements.
Verhey noted the importance of integrating beloved characters while ensuring that art details resonate with die-hard fans. The set promises a rich tapestry of visual storytelling, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible within the Magic universe.
Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek set is set to release on November 13, 2026, with prerelease events occurring from November 6 to 12.
