Introducing Auntie Juan: At 60, this Chinese woman began gaming to connect with her son’s addiction and is now a gaming sensation.

The story of Zhong Juanjuan, a 60-year-old Chinese woman known as “Auntie Juan,” highlights an inspiring journey from skepticism about gaming to becoming a celebrated gamer herself. Initially, Zhong viewed gaming as a distraction for her son, who had struggled academically due to his gaming habits. Instead of repeating her earlier tactics of pulling him away from gaming, she decided to learn how to play herself during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Zhong faced challenges as a beginner, struggling with controls and slow reactions, but with her son’s guidance, she honed her skills, particularly in shooting games like Counter-Strike. She dedicated significant time to practice, even leading to her son managing her gaming hours to ensure she got enough rest.

In 2022, Zhong ventured into livestreaming, where her age, unique story, and gaming prowess attracted a substantial audience, garnering over 500,000 followers. Despite facing skepticism and doubts about her abilities, she showcased her skills in various matches, notably eliminating a renowned young esports player, Danil “donk” Kryshkovets. This event in 2024 helped amplify her popularity.

Zhong’s success has also prompted discussions about age, gender roles, and gaming culture. By challenging traditional norms and emphasizing the cognitive benefits of gaming, she encourages others to pursue new interests regardless of age. Her rise to fame transformed her life and she now serves as a role model, reminding viewers that pursuing passions can lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths.
