NYC Issues Travel Warning as Nor’easter Brings Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Coastal Flooding Risks

Mayor Mamdani has issued a warning for New Yorkers to take extra precautions as a nor’easter approaches, expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds this weekend.

Starting at 2 p.m. Friday and continuing through Sunday morning, residents should prepare for up to three inches of rain, potential coastal flooding, and wind gusts reaching 50 mph. These conditions could lead to downed tree limbs and power lines.

Mamdani emphasized the need for caution, urging travelers to allow extra time, check their travel plans, and avoid low-lying coastal roads during high tide. Rain is anticipated to start Friday evening and intensify throughout the weekend, with the heaviest downpours expected Saturday morning. Some areas could see localized rainfall totals of up to five inches.

Winds will be particularly fierce on bridges and coastal areas, creating risks of fallen debris. Coastal flooding is predicted during high tides on Friday evening and Saturday morning, potentially affecting parked vehicles. People living in basement or ground-floor apartments should have a safety plan in case of worsening flood conditions.

Drivers are advised not to attempt crossing floodwaters.
