Bowling Center and Entertainment Hub Planned for Hilo

The Windward Planning Commission recently voted unanimously to recommend amendments that would facilitate the development of a bowling alley and entertainment complex by KBXtreme in Hilo. This approval extends the construction timeline and provides flexibility in infrastructure design, such as street improvements.

KBXtreme plans to construct this facility on a 5.075-acre area after purchasing it for $575,000 in 2017. The property’s current assessed value is about $1.3 million. Hilo hasn’t had a bowling alley since 2014 when Hilo Lanes closed.

The project, which has an estimated construction cost exceeding $10 million, aims to cater to a variety of entertainment needs alongside bowling. The developers emphasize the importance of pedestrian and bicycle access, agreeing on the necessity for safe infrastructure but requesting flexibility for final design solutions based on engineering assessments.

Public testimony highlighted concerns regarding accessible infrastructure, with a focus on ensuring continuous and compliant sidewalks. KBXtreme’s president stated that safety and accessibility for all community members are top priorities as they plan this facility.
