Tow Truck Mishap: Vehicle Flees During Transport | News

SUV Accident on the Beltline

MADISON, Wis. — An unusual incident occurred on Thursday when an SUV rolled off a tow truck and collided with a pole on the Beltline.

A witness captured the moment, exclaiming, “There’s an HRV rolling down, oh my gosh.” The SUV, meant to be secured to the tow truck, became detached due to a technical mishap.

John Schmidt, co-owner of Schmidt Auto Incorporated, explained the situation: “We’re on dollies, where the front wheels wouldn’t normally roll. You couldn’t engage the emergency brake because the keys were not available. What happened is when you got to the corner and took off, one of the straps that was holding the vehicle had released.”

The incident occurred in the westbound lanes as the tow truck approached exit 260 A-B onto Fish Hatchery Road. Despite efforts to prevent it, the vehicle rolled and struck a pole. Fortunately, the vehicle’s owner did not incur any charges for the repairs.

“We took the vehicle over to the body shop, explained what happened, and paid for the repairs. It’s our fault,” Schmidt stated.

He acknowledged that whether the issue stemmed from human error or equipment failure, such mishaps can happen. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
