The Space Development Agency (SDA) plans to launch 21 Tranche 1 data transport satellites on October 5. This marks the fourth mission for the Tranche 1 series and Northrop Grumman’s first involvement in this program, contributing with another 21 satellites and 14 missile tracking spacecraft. The launch, scheduled for 1:15 a.m. local time from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
This mission faces potential challenges, as SDA Director Gurpartap Sandhoo noted that the scale of launching 21 satellites differs significantly from deploying smaller batches. The SDA has encountered previous delays and issues due to supply chain complications and technical challenges, prompting longer-than-expected operational checkouts.
As the SDA continues to ramp up its satellite deployment, it aims to refine its processes and improve oversight of contractors for future tranches, targeting full deployment of all 154 Tranche 1 satellites by late spring 2027.
