Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is implementing stricter measures against vehicle theft, introducing a new law that makes it a felony to possess devices used to break into cars or steal them. This lawsuit requires proof of intent from investigators.
Dayton Police Chief Eric Henderson shared insights into the rising trend of auto theft, noting that thieves are using compact devices to easily access and steal vehicles. Residents like Sarah Ran from Montgomery County are responding by investing in security measures, including GPS systems and AI cameras, to protect their property.
Recently, a 20-year-old man was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle, allegedly using one of these devices linked to numerous thefts. Chief Henderson highlighted that one such device had been associated with 76 stolen cars. The law aims to penalize offenders who possess these tools, as it often leads to significant consequences for vehicle owners. The city is projected to record 1,400 theft reports this year.
