Montgomery News: WSSC Energy Challenges, Strategies for Economic Growth, and Initiatives for Reducing Food Waste

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday during the Wheaton Arts Parade, while we faced some rain, many people across the Eastern seaboard were contending with severe flooding and power outages. This serves as a timely reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness, which begins at home and extends throughout our neighborhoods. Let’s hope for fair weather as we embrace the joys of fall.

WSSC’s Power Issues at Water Filtration Plant

Recently, WSSC had to implement water restrictions due to unexpected electrical issues at its water filtration system. Thankfully, rapid temporary fixes were deployed, and the situation was managed without needing a boil order. Montgomery County swiftly mobilized emergency resources, thanks to our Office of Emergency Management and other collaborators.

I extend my gratitude to every WSSC customer who reduced their water consumption during this period. Your cooperation significantly aided the situation, and I’m pleased to report that WSSC has resumed normal operations.

This incident underscores the urgent need to upgrade our aging infrastructure. We must ensure reliable water delivery to our residents and mitigate the disruption that could arise from a water shortage.

Economic Development Week

I participated in Economic Development Week, touring Saint-Gobain’s facility in Gaithersburg, where they produce specialized products for advanced life sciences. Our Economic Development Corporation is actively fostering growth, as demonstrated in a recent panel involving several industry leaders.

Montgomery County has seen exciting expansions and job retention announcements from notable companies, adding to our economic vitality. Our talented workforce, bolstered by local educational institutions, positions us favorably against other regions.

Small Business Visits to End September

Supporting small businesses is vital for our local economy. Last week, I toured several local establishments to celebrate Hispanic and African Heritage Months. Notable visits included Dr. Jose Arroyo’s Family Dental practice, which serves a critical community need, and businesses like La Mixteca and Connaisseur Paris that contribute vibrant cultural offerings.

Local government resources play an essential role in helping these enterprises thrive, and I commend our Business Center and Regional Services Centers for their efforts.

A new MARC train route now provides a direct connection between Montgomery County and Baltimore, reducing travel times significantly. This enhancement is crucial for improving regional transit and alleviating reliance on cars, benefiting our environment and community.

Food Waste Prevention Week

As Food Waste Prevention Week concludes on October 4, consider that nearly 95,000 tons of food scraps are wasted annually in Montgomery County. Initiatives like our Office of Food Systems Resilience address this challenge by promoting food recovery partnerships to support local communities.

I had the honor of recognizing organizations like Nourishing Bethesda for their efforts in combating food insecurity, highlighting the importance of community engagement in addressing these issues.

Federal Assistance for COVID-19 Related Costs Ends

We have reached the conclusion of a six-year effort to secure over $176 million in FEMA reimbursements for COVID-19-related costs. I express my gratitude to County staff who documented expenditures crucial for emergency functions throughout the pandemic.

Nominations are open for the Human Rights Hall of Fame, which honors those who have made significant contributions to civil rights in our community. If you know someone deserving, please submit a nomination before the October 23 deadline.
