Air Force and Space Force Aim for Record Recruitment Targets by 2027

The Air Force has adjusted its fiscal 2026 recruiting goal downward by a few hundred enlisted Airmen, primarily due to unexpectedly high retention and training slot availability. Nevertheless, it aims high for fiscal 2027, setting its largest recruitment target for the Active-Duty Air Force in nearly 25 years, while the Space Force has also set its highest recruitment goal to date.

In fiscal 2026, the Air Force successfully enlisted 31,950 Airmen and 730 Guardians, which is 800 recruits shy of its earlier target. This change was made to align with new realities in retention rates and Basic Military Training (BMT) capacity, as higher retention limits the number of new recruits. Notably, 15,799 recruits are currently in the Delayed Entry Program, giving the Air Force a solid pipeline as the new fiscal year begins.

For fiscal 2027, the Air Force’s recruitment goals are ambitious, aiming for 36,300 non-prior service enlisted Airmen and 1,402 enlisted Guardians. These targets mark the first time in over a decade that the Air Force aims to exceed 35,000 recruits, coinciding with heightened interest in military service amid broader Pentagon resource increases.

The Air Force plans to grow its Active-Duty end strength by nearly 9,000 personnel, while the Space Force aims to add 2,800 Guardians. Strategies for 2027 will adapt based on labor market trends and recruitment data, focusing on restoring key career fields like maintenance and logistics to address staffing shortages.
