Air and Space Forces Achieve Recruitment Objectives and Establish Ambitious 2027 Goals

The Department of the Air Force successfully met its fiscal 2026 recruitment goals, enlisting 31,950 airmen and 730 guardians. The achievement was attributed to consistent efforts across recruiting squadrons rather than a singular program. Earlier, the Air Force had announced it reached its target five months ahead of schedule, initially set at 32,750 airmen and 730 guardians, largely thanks to the Delayed Entry Program.

Adjustments to the recruitment projection were made considering retention rates and training availability, ensuring the goals were met. Col. Lacresha Merkle, commander of Air Force Recruiting Service (AFRS), emphasized the dedication of recruiters in achieving these numbers.

As the new fiscal year began, plans for fiscal 2027 were initiated, with increased recruitment goals of 36,300 airmen and 1,402 guardians. AFRS, located at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, oversees recruitment for enlisted, officer, and Space Force accessions, continually adjusting strategies based on labor market trends and demand.

Other military branches also met their fiscal 2026 recruitment targets: the Navy recruited 45,112 new sailors, while the Army and Marine Corps added 61,500 soldiers and 31,250 enlisted Marines, respectively. The Army also highlighted success in meeting reserve and special forces goals for the first time in a decade.

Cristina Stassis, a reporter focused on defense and military matters, covers these significant developments.
