Haywood County Hosts 70th Annual SATW Convention
HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — In a significant milestone for western North Carolina, Haywood County is hosting the 70th annual Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) convention, showcasing the community’s resilience and attractions over two years after the impacts of Hurricane Helene.
This year’s convention, taking place from Sunday, Oct. 4, to Thursday, Oct. 8, marks a first for both North Carolina and rural locations, with leaders eager to share the region’s recovery story.
Jason Frye, chair of the 2026 convention and a seasoned travel writer, expressed enthusiasm about the event’s global nature, which has previously been hosted in cities like Istanbul and New Zealand. “We go where there are interesting stories to explore and interesting people to meet,” said Frye.
Corrina Ruffieux, executive director of Visit Haywood, highlighted the importance of showcasing the region’s comeback. “We are mostly back,” she stated, referring to recovery efforts since the hurricane. Frye added that bringing travel writers from across the country to Haywood County is vital, as it helps tell the broader story of North Carolina.
Local businesses and partners, including Lake Junaluska, Cataloochee Ranch, and the Waynesville Inn Golf Club, have collaborated to create more than 30 events for the occasion, focusing on the county’s vibrant community and heritage. Attendees will participate in various activities, from meeting alpacas to exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The convention aims to inspire writers to produce stories that will attract visitors, helping to re-establish Haywood County on travel itineraries nationwide. “We’re meeting with people who have been impacted by the storm and have now picked themselves up. We hope to continue that recovery story,” Frye remarked.
As the county prepares for this prestigious event, there is optimism that the exposure will reinvigorate local tourism and highlight the unique culture, food, and music of Haywood County.
