The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed new sanctions on key sectors of Iran’s industrial infrastructure, including its railroad and automotive industries. This move targets some of the last significant sources of revenue for the Iranian regime amid ongoing U.S. sanctions and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The sanctions concentrated on two major companies responsible for 90% of Iran’s domestic auto market, a major motorcycle manufacturer, and various auto parts exporters from countries including Indonesia, the UAE, Turkey, and Hong Kong. Additionally, state and privately owned rail service providers were affected.
These measures are part of “Operation Economic Outcast,” aimed at isolating Iran and cutting off its revenue streams. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the action would diminish the Iranian regime’s ability to fund terrorism and that it lays a foundation for further isolating Iran economically.
