Neuroscience Introduces Seminar Series Featuring Distinguished Neurobiologist Peter Strick P’98 Discussing Brain Circuitry | News

The Bates Program in Neuroscience recently launched its new Seminar Series with a talk from Peter Strick P’98, Thomas Detre Professor and Chair of Neurobiology at the University of Pittsburgh. According to Justin Hulbert, the chair of the program, the series was developed in response to student interest in external developments in the field. Instructional specialist Gwendolyn Calhoon is overseeing the series, which is partly funded by a donation from psychiatrist Robin Bitner ’95.

Strick’s talk, held on September 30 at Bonney Science Center, focused on mapping brain circuitry and central nervous system control. His research stems from a desire to understand human volition, exploring neurological processes linked to simple actions and diseases like Parkinson’s and ALS.

Strick pioneered methods for tracing neural connections using neurotropic viruses, allowing extensive mapping of brain circuits. He highlighted the significance of this knowledge for understanding cognition, movement, and mental health disorders.

At the University of Pittsburgh, Strick mentors graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, including Bates Professor Jason Castro, who praised Strick’s impactful teaching style. Strick is also set to become the president of the Society for Neuroscience in 2027.

The seminar series aims to build community within the neuroscience program, which recently opened a new student lounge. Following Strick’s talk, attendees enjoyed a reception that encouraged informal discussions and networking.

Strick emphasized the increasing need for neuroscientists due to rising cases of neurological disorders. His hope is to enhance access to research and support the scientific community during challenging times.

This inaugural seminar is part of a plan to host multiple seminars each semester, with the goal of featuring more speakers in the upcoming winter semester.
