A man in Shikoku was caught stealing 24 medaka fish from an unmanned roadside shop on September 25. He was seen on security footage taking the fish without paying, ignoring a payment box. After the theft, the shop owner, upon reviewing the footage, contacted police.
Later that day, the same man returned to the scene, where the owner recognized him and noted his license plate. When confronted, the man fled, discarding the stolen fish and containers from his car window in an attempt to destroy evidence as he escaped. Police pursued and eventually apprehended him, suspecting theft.
The total estimated loss was about 11,500 yen. The incident highlights the vulnerabilities of unmanned sales and the lengths some might go to evade capture.
