Hydrogen Bus Fleets: A New Solution by FPS.Energy
FPS.Energy is tackling the challenges surrounding hydrogen bus fleets by providing both fuel and refueling solutions. This comprehensive approach aims to lower the barriers for public transport operators transitioning to hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Key Developments
Hydrasun has partnered with FPS.Energy to supply three modular hydrogen refueling units. These will be utilized to fuel 35 fuel cell buses operated by a public transport provider in Brandenburg, Germany.
- Equipment Details: Two HyQube 500 systems and one HyQube 850 will be strategically installed in Spremberg and Guben.
- Hydrogen Supply: FPS.Energy will also deliver certified renewable hydrogen via tube trailer, ensuring clean energy for the buses.
Refueling Solutions
The hydrogen gas is compressed to either 500 or 1,000 bar and stored in bundles of about 50 kg each. This setup allows for refueling at 350 or 700 bar and adheres to the SAE J2601 refueling protocol, with remote monitoring for optimal efficiency.
Strategic Insights
Mohammed Abu Abed, General Manager at Hydrasun Germany, emphasized the importance of partnerships for scaling hydrogen adoption in Germany. He noted that combining local expertise with broader capabilities is crucial for effective hydrogen infrastructure rollout, contributing to zero-emission public transport and stimulating the local economy.
Future Prospects
While specific details about the bus operator, contract value, and start date remain undisclosed, the integration of refueling hardware with third-party fuel suppliers allows operators to run hydrogen buses without the need to produce their own gas. FPS.Energy aims to extend this model across Germany, setting a precedent for future hydrogen bus fleet deployments in Europe.
