California’s high-speed rail project is under scrutiny after the Inspector General found that the California High-Speed Rail Authority improperly spent over half a million dollars on travel expenses for private consultants. This includes international flights and visits to entertainment venues like a nightclub and a tiki bar.
Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo highlighted that the report mentioned inappropriate rideshare trips to a Planet Fitness gym, an escape room, and various restaurants. The total identified as improper or avoidable expenses was $624,400, comprising $81,000 of potentially unallowable expenses under state travel rules and $543,400 not permitted under the consultants’ contracts.
In response, the High-Speed Rail Authority stated it values the Inspector General’s oversight and is committed to improving transparency and internal controls. They plan to enhance documentation and approval processes for consultant travel and recover any identified improper costs, while working closely with the Inspector General for corrective actions.
