Tyler Chrystal Recognized with Prestigious Award for Teaching Excellence
WEST SPRINGFIELD — In a heartwarming ceremony, automotive technician instructor Tyler Chrystal received a $75,000 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence, celebrated by enthusiastic students and faculty at the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative’s Career Technical Education Center.
Accompanied by colleagues and dignitaries, including Executive Director Mortin Alvin and Acting Associate Commissioner Nicole Smith, Chrystal was met with cheers and applause from students who shouted, “We love you, Mr. Chrystal,” as he approached an oversized check displayed in the gymnasium under a “congratulations” banner.
A Noteworthy Achievement
Chrystal was recognized among 25 public high school skilled trades teachers across the U.S. and became the first-ever awardee from Massachusetts. The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools program, initiated by The Smidt Foundation, aims to uplift skilled trades education by granting substantial awards to outstanding instructors. Out of 550 applicants from 49 states, Chrystal was selected, with the total prize money for the program increased to $2 million this year.
Excellence in Skilled Trades Education
The award recognizes not only individual brilliance but also the vital need for a workforce skilled in trades. “The need for high school classes to prepare students for that work has never been higher,” said Smidt.
Chrystal, who has a decade of teaching experience and a background as a master technician, expressed the impact of the award: “It’s good for the school, it’s good for the students.” His commitment to student career readiness includes partnerships with local businesses to provide real-world training and certifications.
Focus on Student Development
With an enrollment of about 70 students in the automotive program, Chrystal noted an increasing interest in skilled trades, which he attributes to a growing recognition of their value. Principal Donald Jarvis emphasized that the program’s success is driven by dedicated and enthusiastic instructors who connect well with students.
Future Plans
The school plans to allocate a portion of the funding towards enhancing equipment for vehicle diagnostics, reflecting the collective input of teachers and students in decisions regarding the use of the award funds.
Conclusion
Tyler Chrystal’s dedication and innovative teaching methods underscore the importance of skilled trades education, nurturing a new generation of professionals ready to meet industry demands. His achievement not only highlights personal excellence but also serves as an inspiration for educators and students alike.
