Iowa Companies Embrace AI: Key Findings from the Iowa AI Business Survey

During the Technology Association of Iowa’s Digital Infrastructure Summit, Chris Porter, the director of the AI program at Drake University, shared exciting early findings from the Iowa AI Business Survey. This research, co-founded by Porter and fellow professor Chris Snider, explores how Iowa businesses are adopting AI technologies.

Overview of Survey Findings

  1. Widespread Adoption:

    • A significant shift towards AI adoption is evident, with many companies integrating AI into multiple use cases and policies. Porter noted that almost all survey respondents (100%) reported having someone in charge of AI strategy.
  2. Industry Insights:

    • The survey sampled responses from 36 businesses, predominantly larger firms based in Des Moines. Key sectors implementing AI include IT software development and customer service.
  3. AI Tools in Use:

    • Notably, 95% of respondents are utilizing Microsoft Copilot, and 60% are also integrating other tools like ChatGPT and Claude.
  4. Future Expectations:

    • A striking 97% of companies anticipate increasing their AI spending over the next year, with Porter stating, “Every company expects to use more AI next year than this year.”
  5. Impact on Workforce:

    • Contrary to fears of job losses, companies indicated a commitment to their current workforce, emphasizing enhanced productivity through AI tools. Many respondents reported significant investments in upskilling, with about one-third having trained over 75% of their workforce.
  6. Education and Skills Gap:

    • When addressing whether Iowa’s higher education system meets AI skill demands, 40% of participants responded with uncertainty. This gap suggests a need for better alignment between educational institutions and industry requirements.
  7. Next Steps:

    • The comprehensive survey findings are slated for release on November 5, coinciding with the Prometheus Awards.

Conclusion

The results from the Iowa AI Business Survey indicate a robust commitment to AI adoption among companies in Iowa, along with a proactive approach to workforce development. However, addressing educational gaps will be crucial to ensure that future employees are prepared for the demands of an increasingly AI-driven landscape.
