Perspective: Kennedy’s ‘flawed science’: MAGA support strengthens HHS secretary’s power and appeal

The recent measles outbreak in Pennsylvania has raised significant concern, especially following the reported four deaths—the state’s first in 35 years. Despite these fatalities, the federal measles death count remains at zero, which has sparked debate regarding vaccine trust amid the Trump administration’s policies, particularly those led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

With nearly 800 cases reported in Pennsylvania, which constitutes a large portion of the over 3,400 national cases, a staggering 99% of infected individuals were unvaccinated. Kennedy has criticized Governor Josh Shapiro for what he describes as “fearmongering,” arguing that political agendas are being fueled by fears surrounding infectious diseases.

In response, Pennsylvania’s Health Secretary Dr. Debra L. Bogen expressed concerns to the CDC about the detrimental impact of not publicly acknowledging the deaths, while former CDC officials pointed out discrepancies in how different states’ data are treated based on political affiliations.

Kennedy’s recent actions, including terminating the entire Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, and Trump’s call to modify the MMR vaccine protocol have drawn scrutiny, especially since misinformation surrounding vaccine safety continues to influence public opinion and policy.

Remarkably, Kennedy retains a degree of popularity, as highlighted by a recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll indicating that 43% of respondents view him favorably, likely due to his adept use of social media and support from right-wing media outlets.
