Meridian Space to Distinguish SpinLaunch Division Before Inaugural Satellite Launch

Meridian Space and SpinLaunch: Key Updates

Meridian Space is officially separating SpinLaunch into its own entity, allowing Meridian to concentrate on its broadband satellite constellation plans. As part of this transition, Meridian’s first satellite will launch on the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission to test its technology in orbit.

A spokesperson from Meridian confirmed this week that the company is building a team to define SpinLaunch’s strategy and will share further leadership details soon. Notably, SpinLaunch is not up for sale; instead, it aims to enhance and commercialize its kinetic launch technology, associated with lower launch costs and hypersonic applications.

Founded in 2014, SpinLaunch developed a unique kinetic launch system that utilizes a ground-based accelerator for rocket launches. In 2022, it announced a plan for a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband constellation, tapping former OneWeb executive Massimiliano Ladovaz to lead the initiative.

First Customer Link Demo

Meridian’s inaugural satellite, named First Customer Link, is set for launch via SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. Built by Kongsberg NanoAvionics, this satellite comes with customers interested in utilizing its services, with testing scheduled at ground sites in France and Miami, partnered with Equinx.

Ladovaz highlighted the unique testing capabilities of their architecture, allowing for a variety of waveforms, which are appealing to both commercial and defense clients. Meridian’s business model emphasizes ownership and control, providing options for full or fractional ownership to interested sovereign governments and regional operators.

While initially designed as flat satellites, Meridian is also introducing “Meridian Express,” a satellite variant that allows for quicker deployment. The company projects interest in launching a smaller constellation next year, responding to the urgency from customers who want to commence operations before the end of the decade.

In summary, Meridian Space continues to push its innovative satellite projects, combining capabilities with an eye towards customer demands for fast deployment and operational efficiency in the evolving space landscape.
