Fundraising Campaign for Milkweed Commons Pocket Park in South Bend
Overview:
A campaign is currently underway to raise funds for improvements to Milkweed Commons Pocket Park on Michigan Street in South Bend, with the goal of raising $50,000.
Matching Grant Opportunity:
Charity Stowe, vice president of Milkweed Gardens Inc., highlighted that if the fundraising goal is met before the deadline, the funds will be matched with an additional $55,000 grant. This would total $105,000 for park enhancements. Currently, organizers have raised about two-thirds of the target amount, and they must complete their fundraising by October 10.
Stowe emphasized the importance of reaching the goal, stating, “Not reaching $50,000 means leaving $55,000 on the table.”
Proposed Improvements:
The funds will be allocated for:
- A music stage
- A fire pit and lounge chairs
- Eventually, public bathrooms
Additionally, the park will feature new trees and streetscape beds to mitigate the urban heat island effect caused by surrounding concrete and asphalt.
Community Impact:
Tim Liddell, president of NatureConnect, explained that the improvements aim to provide green spaces and vegetable gardens in food deserts, meeting local community needs.
Barbara Dale, a board member of Milkweed Gardens, voiced enthusiasm about the addition of streetscape beds, which will enhance the park’s sustainability and comfort.
Funding Sources:
Other funding is sourced from grants, including:
- Community Foundation Grant
- City’s Vibrant Places Grant
- Urban and Community Forestry Grant
Completion Timeline:
Organizers aim to complete the park improvements by spring. However, if the fundraising goal isn’t met by October 10, project delays are likely.
