VCU’s Space Strategy and Planning Program is set to enhance its space management using innovative technologies. This initiative will utilize tools like Occuspace sensors and CampusIQ technology to analyze how spaces are utilized across various campus facilities, including the University Student Commons and James Branch Cabell Library.
William C. Nelson Jr., senior vice provost, stresses the importance of effectively managing these resources to improve the campus experience while ensuring data privacy. The technology will gather anonymous usage data, maintaining confidentiality by avoiding individual tracking.
Starting October 1, the implementation will focus on academic, administrative, research, and student support buildings, excluding residential halls, parking garages, and athletic facilities. This data will help in optimizing space based on occupancy trends, benefiting students and faculty alike.
Moreover, VCU’s program aims to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and guide master planning decisions, enhancing the university’s strategic mission. A pilot study during the 2025-26 academic year has already proven the technology’s effectiveness in optimizing research space allocations.
