Energy and Environment Secretary discusses potential for nuclear facility in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is vying to become the site of a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus, a project that would encompass a research park, advanced manufacturing center, and technology hub. The initiative was highlighted by Jeff Starling, the state’s Secretary of Energy and Environment, who emphasized its “once in a generation potential.”

The U.S. Department of Energy has launched a competition for the campus, receiving 28 applications, and Oklahoma is among the finalists announced in late July. Starling noted that a final decision is expected by the end of the year, after which they’ll identify suitable locations within the state.

The proposed campus structure will include three key components: reactor deployment and isotope production, enrichment through recycling, and management of used nuclear fuel. Local communities have expressed a strong interest in hosting the campus, with Starling stating that those closest to nuclear facilities often support them the most.

Starling contrasted the initiative with controversial data center projects, arguing that the nuclear campus could create up to 25,000 jobs and provide substantial economic benefits. He mentioned that increased knowledge about the campus boosts community comfort with the project and its potential for future generations.

Oklahoma is competing against five other states: West Virginia, Utah, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Idaho, with three states set to be chosen by the end of the year.
