Caring and Sharing Locally: Regional Science Consortium Hub

Presque Isle State Park and Erie’s bayfront are popular destinations for both residents and tourists. Ensuring these areas remain environmentally friendly and safe requires significant effort. At the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, the Regional Science Consortium Center works diligently on various environmental projects, including water quality testing, monitoring harmful algal blooms, and executing wetland restoration and fisheries initiatives.

Jeanette Schnars, PhD, the executive director, highlighted the importance of routine monitoring, which helps inform beach and fisheries managers about water conditions. This monitoring is vital for community safety, especially in alerting pet owners about harmful algal blooms.

Recently, the Regional Science Consortium Center received a donation from Loving Giving Local at a crucial time. With over 3,200 students from multiple counties participating in their educational programs each year, the funding will support necessary supplies for their projects.

Joe Askins from Auto Express Resale Center emphasized the community impact of the donation, particularly in supporting educational activities focused on environmental safety. Looking ahead, the center is set to host a Forensic Science Murder Mystery event on October 10, which aims to enhance their student forensic science programs.
