Myers Pumpkins: A 27-Year Fall Tradition
Myers Pumpkins began with a simple phone call 27 years ago. Today, it has transformed into a vibrant fall destination filled with pumpkins, photo props, hot cider, and delectable doughnuts, all set against the backdrop of picturesque mountain views. For many James Madison University (JMU) students, it offers a delightful escape from campus and a chance to experience the beauty of Harrisonburg.
A Warm Welcome
Located just 15 minutes from JMU, Myers Pumpkins kicked off its 2023 fall season on September 19. Despite warm and humid conditions, owner Mike Myers reported an impressive turnout on opening day. “After 27 years of doing this, there’s not a whole lot of unexpected things that we see anymore,” he remarked, reflecting on the threshold of another season.
Preparations for the Season
In the weeks leading up to opening day, a dedicated team of six to eight people spends two weeks working diligently to prepare the farm. Their efforts include mowing, setting up photo props, and stocking the store with pumpkins and seasonal products. Myers humorously noted, “We always laugh because we say once we get open, we can relax. Most of the work is already done by then.”
The Roots of the Farm
The story of Myers Pumpkins began well before its inception. Two decades ago, Myers received a call from his friend Jeff Phelps, who needed honeybees for pollination. At the time, Myers was studying beekeeping and had ordered hives. “I’ll pollinate your pumpkins for you,” he offered. This simple act of friendship evolved into what is now a cherished family-run pumpkin farm, with Myers still pollinating Phelps’ pumpkins today.
Myers’ father, Wayne, who passed away two years ago, played a significant role in establishing the farm, with his former home now serving as an Airbnb accommodation.
A Growing Community Presence
Over the years, Myers Pumpkins has increasingly attracted local families and JMU students, with the latter group multiplying in numbers. Myers estimates that student visitors have quadrupled in the past five years, thanks to word-of-mouth, social media endorsements, and university connections.
Sophomore theatre major Izzy Jewell shared how she discovered the farm during a sorority event last year. “I was so new to Harrisonburg… I didn’t even know this was here,” she said, expressing her appreciation for the local charm and the variety of experiences the farm offers.
Fall Attractions
In addition to pumpkin picking, Myers Pumpkins provides a wide array of attractions, including corn mazes, photo opportunities, and breathtaking mountain views. Myers emphasized that the changing seasons enhance the scenery, making the farm an ideal spot for students to savor the beauty of Harrisonburg.
For students like Jewell, Myers Pumpkins is more than just a seasonal stop. It represents a chance to explore and connect with the surrounding area, enriching their college experience.
A Local Gem
As the fall season unfolds, Myers Pumpkins stands as a testament to community spirit and tradition. What started as a single phone call has blossomed into an enduring fall tradition, welcoming families, locals, and students to create cherished memories just 15 minutes from JMU.
