University of Nevada, Reno introduces new degree program in Animal Science

The University of Nevada, Reno, is now offering a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, addressing a significant gap for Nevada students. This new program, headed by Dr. Amilton de Mello, focuses on contemporary challenges in livestock and meat production, covering essential topics like breeding, genetics, nutrition, and animal welfare.

With Nevada being home to approximately 450,000 head of cattle, the demand for this degree is expected to lead to career opportunities in ranching, veterinary medicine, and biotechnology. Notably, students will receive hands-on experience and mentoring, preparing them for future challenges in animal agriculture.

The program also emphasizes sustainability, using emerging technologies like drone mapping, virtual fencing, and AI for livestock management. Additionally, investments in facilities, such as the Main Station Farm Science Center, enhance educational opportunities and aim to keep a larger portion of the state’s meat production local, rather than sending livestock out of state for processing.

The initiative serves both educational and economic needs, aiming to train the next generation of animal producers and bolster Nevada’s agricultural industry. For more information about the program, interested individuals can visit the University’s website or contact Dr. de Mello directly.
