Hyundai Mobis is actively working to transform South Korea’s automotive semiconductor sector with a new strategy focused on demand-side leadership. The company aims to streamline processes from development, through vehicle verification, to commercialization, with a target to increase the current localization rate of around 5%.
On the 30th, Hyundai Mobis signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for “Future Vehicle Ecosystem Building Cooperation” at its Seoul headquarters. This ceremony included representatives from 18 entities, including automotive parts manufacturers, semiconductor companies, and research organizations within the M.AX Alliance, which is dedicated to driving AI transformation in South Korea’s manufacturing sector.
As the anchor company in the M.AX Alliance, Hyundai Mobis will leverage its role as both a major semiconductor buyer and auto parts supplier to strengthen the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. The initiative focuses on a demand-linked development framework; the company will identify semiconductor needs for vehicles, establishing specifications for fabless companies and research institutions throughout development.
Additionally, Hyundai Mobis aims to support the transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs) by developing standardized platforms for various South Korean automakers. This effort is designed to minimize the cost and time needed for individual companies to adapt, while enhancing overall software competitiveness.
The initiative underscores the interconnectedness of automotive semiconductors and SDVs, recognizing that a stable supply chain is critical for the future competitiveness of the industry. Hyundai Mobis plans to host the second Automotive Semiconductor Forum, “Auto Semicon Korea (ASK),” later this year to further promote collaboration and technology exchange in this vital sector.
