Review of “Resident Evil” (2026)
After years of disappointing adaptations, “Resident Evil” (2026), directed by Zach Cregger, takes a fresh approach to the beloved game series. While earlier films, particularly those from 2002 to 2017 directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, focused on original characters and were criticized for their lack of coherent plots, they still grossed over $1 billion combined.
Past Attempts and Reboots
The franchise saw unsuccessful reboots in 2021 and 2022, including a canceled Netflix series. In 2021, “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” attempted to adapt the original trilogy but fell short, leading to its own cancellation after lackluster box office performance.
The New Direction
Cregger, known for his work on “Barbarian”, announced his involvement in a reboot in January 2025, fueling excitement among fans. However, concerns arose about the exclusion of core characters and the introduction of a new lead, Bryan, alongside a contemporary setting and Cregger’s comedic horror style.
Box Office Success
Upon its release on September 18, 2026, the film shattered franchise records, earning $60 million domestically on its opening weekend, despite initial backlash.
Audience Reaction
In my own viewing experience at AMC Empire 25, I found the film deeply engaging. Bryan’s relatable journey mirrors a video game experience, complemented by settings like the rural house and Raccoon City streets. Easter eggs from the games thrilled the audience, creating a shared excitement in the theater.
While the climax felt rushed, I appreciated Cregger’s choices, blending modern storytelling with a nod to the franchise’s roots. I rate “Resident Evil” (2026) a 4/5 and highly recommend seeing it in IMAX for an enhanced experience.
Conclusion
Despite Cregger’s announcement that he will step back from franchise filmmaking, this installment revives hope for video game adaptations. It’s a refreshing take that may finally satisfy both fans and newcomers alike.
