Femme in STEM event introduces interactive science activities at Wilmington mall

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher recently hosted its annual “Femme in STEM” event at Independence Mall, bringing interactive science experiences to local shoppers. Collaborators included UNCW, local colleges, and WECT’s First Alert Weather Team, all aiming to inspire young girls to explore careers in science and conservation.

Tabitha Elger from the aquarium explained that the initiative seeks to engage children early in STEM fields to foster a lasting interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The aquarium also set up a mini exhibit, Discovery Bay, at the mall during its ongoing expansion project.

This effort underscores the importance of breaking down barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields and encouraging diversity in STEM careers.
