WNC Business Devastated by Hurricane Helene Slowly Rebounding

Business Rebuilding After Hurricane Helene

CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. — Two years after Hurricane Helene devastated The Hickory Nut, a local business in western North Carolina, the owners are making progress but recognize that the journey to full recovery is still ongoing.

The establishment, which was home to Shari Cummings and her partners, suffered severe flooding and structural damage when the river surged. “I said to Max, ‘We need to get out of the building.’ We got out of the building, and in 12 minutes the whole building was gone,” recalled Cummings, emphasizing their survival as a miracle.

Since that traumatic day, the effort to rebuild has been challenging, filled with numerous obstacles. However, with the help of Amish volunteers from Spokes of Hope, a new structure has emerged on what was once an empty lot. “They started in April and had this done by June,” Cummings mentioned, praising their swift and dedicated work.

While the new building is complete, Cummings acknowledges that customer support and community involvement are essential for moving forward. “We need our customers, our clientele, and the support of the community, which has been amazing so far,” she said. “This is taking a lot of money. It’s taking our life savings, honestly.”

Cummings embodies tenacity, stating, “If you give up, you’re not going to get it, and that’s the bottom line.” The Hickory Nut is currently open seven days a week, weather permitting, as they strive to regain stability and serve their community.
