Williamsburg-Area Teen Who Loves Science Named Finalist in National Contest – Daily Press

Isabel Rossi, a 14-year-old freshman at Jamestown High School, has been recognized as one of 30 finalists in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. Her project, “Listening in the Right Places: Game Theory and Optimization for Earthquake Sensor Placement,” was selected from nearly 10,000 applicants. Isabel designed her project independently, showcasing her dedication to science and innovation.

In her study, Isabel explored optimal sensor placement for detecting earthquakes, applying game theory and mathematical modeling techniques. This research aims to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of seismic wave alerts, which can save lives.

Growing up in a family of educators, Isabel nurtured her passion for science from an early age, inspired by her older sister and experiences with hands-on science activities. She’s actively involved in extracurriculars, including coaching a middle school math competition team and participating in Envirothon, an environmental science competition.

As she prepares for the national competition in Washington, D.C., Isabel hopes to inspire her peers and demonstrate that valuable scientific research can be accomplished with curiosity and hard work, regardless of available resources.
