William Penn Foundation Provides Grants to Preserve Academy of Natural Sciences Museum Accessibility

Drexel University has received a proposal from the William Penn Foundation to cover operating costs at the Academy of Natural Sciences museum for at least a year while assessing its viability. This comes after the museum’s closure announcement effective September 30. The funding aims to explore options for the museum’s future, addressing issues such as deferred maintenance costs and potential fundraising.

Shawn McCaney of the William Penn Foundation emphasized the museum’s historical significance and educational contributions. Drexel acknowledged the proposal but stated no sustainable plan has yet been presented. Academy board chair Suzanne Biemiller expressed openness to the offer but noted the assumption of closure.

Public outrage has been significant, with petitions gathering thousands of signatures and a rally planned to advocate for the museum’s future. Former executive David L. Cohen suggested the museum cannot remain in its current location due to maintenance issues and proposed finding a new space with community collaboration.

City Council member Nina Ahmad continues exploring avenues to support the academy, including potential loans and historic designation for funding opportunities. Discussions between Drexel and the Academy are ongoing to establish a sustainable framework, while McCaney believes a creative solution is possible, citing past successful preservation efforts in Philadelphia.
