Indiana University Cybersecurity Specialists Safeguard Against Undetected Threats as AI Revolutionizes Science and Research

AI in Scientific Research: Balancing Risks and Rewards

The Growing Influence of AI
As AI technology becomes more prevalent, its impact is felt across various professions, including science. Researchers utilize AI to analyze vast datasets, spot trends, generate ideas, and fast-track discoveries in fields like medicine, biology, physics, and astronomy.

However, the increasing use of these AI tools raises concerns about their risks and benefits, particularly regarding the security of the data that fuels scientific progress.

Enhancing Security with NSF Grant

A team at Indiana University, funded by a $1.18 million grant from the National Science Foundation, aims to address these concerns by improving the security of open-source AI research tools. This project seeks to assess the vulnerabilities of these tools and develop solutions to mitigate potential threats.

Project Leadership
The project is spearheaded by Sagar Samtani, an associate professor at the Kelley School of Business, alongside co-leaders Ankit Shah, Dongruo Zhou, and Dave Hancock. They will draw upon their expertise in cybersecurity and AI risk management.

Addressing Open-Source Challenges

Samtani emphasizes the importance of understanding the security implications of using open-source AI models, which could inadvertently expose sensitive data or intellectual property to malicious exploitation. Current research predominantly utilizes these open-source tools, heightening the need for comprehensive security frameworks.

The project will investigate which open-source AI models researchers frequently utilize, evaluating their potential vulnerabilities, and will develop tools to assist researchers in assessing risks and implementing preventive measures.

Next Steps

The initiative will leverage partnerships with Jetstream2, a national cloud service supporting numerous research projects, to validate the effectiveness of the new security tools. This strategic collaboration reflects Indiana University’s robust infrastructure and expertise in cybersecurity and research technologies.

Through this project, the team aims to ensure that AI models are used responsibly and securely in research activities, safeguarding both data integrity and intellectual property from emerging threats.
