Pappas Engages with Lakes Region Entrepreneurs Regarding Increasing Expenses

Rising Costs and Fewer Visitors Impact Lakes Region Businesses

MEREDITH, N.H. — U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas recently visited the Lakes Region to engage with local business owners about the challenges they face, including increased costs and a decline in visitors.

During his visit to Hermit Woods Winery, owner Bob Manley highlighted a noticeable decrease in Canadian tourism, showing a map with only a few pins marking Canadian visitors compared to those from other states and countries.

Manley expressed concern over the declining number of tourists: “We’ve seen a lot more Canadians in years past.” He elaborated on how rising prices—particularly in healthcare and essential goods—are affecting local businesses.

With high gas and food prices, locals are cutting back on expenses, often forgoing leisure activities, which significantly impacts businesses like his winery.

Pappas attributed the rising costs to broader geopolitical issues, including the war in Iran, and emphasized the need for policy changes to alleviate these pressures. He urged for an election that would bring a positive change in Washington, focusing on New Hampshire’s needs.

Business owners like Manley are hoping for swift, positive changes in tourism and economic factors. “I hope change is around the corner,” he said, reflecting the collective sentiment of the local economy.
