Investing in Bell-Ringing Ropes Proves to Be a Smart Choice

The future of bell ringing at the historic All Saints Church in Sawley, Derbyshire, is looking brighter following a £3,500 community grant from Erewash Borough Council aimed at upgrading the belfry. This Grade I listed church features elements that date back to the 11th century, with its tower originating from the 15th century.

The grant will facilitate the replacement of the church’s eight bell ropes, which have seen extensive wear and tear over the years. Ringer Matt Micklewright expressed gratitude for the funding, highlighting that the new ropes will come from a local specialist maker as part of broader refurbishments, including electrical work to install a heater for the chilly winter months in the tower.

Additionally, upgrades will include new carpeting and a webcam to allow viewers to watch the bells being rung. Harry Atkinson, the borough council representative for Sawley, supported the grant, calling it “the very definition of a sound investment.” The church’s oldest bell, made by local foundry master Henry Oldfield in 1591, complements the five newer bells manufactured in Loughborough over a century ago.
