An Atlanta police detective, Ronald Sluss, is under investigation for allegedly stealing a 12-pack of beer from a Cherokee County Publix while driving an undercover police vehicle. On September 16, Sluss entered the store, took the beer valued at $18.99, and left without paying, despite appearing to hold a receipt.
The Publix manager reported the incident to 911, not knowing Sluss was an officer, as he blended in with other customers. It was only after tracking the vehicle that authorities identified Sluss through the Atlanta Police Department. Upon confrontation, he reportedly smelled of alcohol, both from his breath and inside the vehicle.
The Atlanta Police Department has relieved Sluss of his duties and placed him in a non-enforcement status during the investigation, although he remains employed by the department. Customers expressed surprise at the incident, particularly given Sluss’s position as a detective.
