While gamers eagerly await Grand Theft Auto VI, they can revisit a classic with a modern twist. Modder gebdag has released GTA2 RTX Remix, utilizing Nvidia’s RTX Remix technology to enhance Grand Theft Auto 2 with full path tracing and a dynamic day-night cycle.
Originally launched in 1999, GTA2 relied on outdated graphics APIs like DirectDraw, which posed challenges for the integration of modern technologies. To bridge this gap, gebdag created a custom Direct3D 9 renderer that translates the classic game’s graphics pipeline, allowing RTX Remix to render the visuals in real-time.
The mod retains the original gameplay while significantly upgrading the graphics, transforming Anywhere City into a vibrant metropolis with realistic lighting, shadows, and even a day-night cycle. Additional features include support for widescreen 16:9 displays and frame rates up to 60 FPS, along with addressing graphical popping issues of cars and pedestrians.
GTA2 RTX Remix is an open-source project available on GitHub and requires a copy of Grand Theft Auto 2 along with a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or 11 and the necessary RTX Remix runtime files. This new mod joins a wave of similar transformations for classic games, showcasing the capabilities of modern technology in revamping nostalgic titles.
